FAQ about Fouling

Fouled Props, Anne Arundel Dive ServicesFouling begins as a layer of slime or biofilm. Over time, other creatures, like barnicles, take up residence. Before you know it, you have an entire underwater ecosystem coating the hull, propellers and intakes.
Marine growth affects your boat's speed, performance, maneuverability and efficiency.

Signs of a fowled boat bottom:

  • Higher RPMs to get to speed or no movement
  • Engine overheat
  • Rudder is not responding (difficult turning/reversing)
  • Sailboat coming in 8th place instead of 1st (slimy, slow hull)
  • Lower fuel efficiency - More time spent at the fuel dock than enjoying your boat

In addition to the complications fouling presents to your boat, it can also have a toll on the delicate ecosystem here on the Chesapeake Bay.
